When I was new to the faith, my efforts at evangelizing consisted of trying to “prove” the truths of Christianity. Looking back, it truly was a garbled mess of pleas mingled with “facts” and arguments. Honestly, only a magnificent and powerful God such as ours is able to redeem any part of what I had done.
It wasn’t until I listened to Ray Comfort’s “Hell’s Best Kept Secret” that I realized why I was off track and by how much.
According to Ray Comfort, out of 100 people who make a decision for Christ, the modern evangelical church is producing a staggering 80-90 percent backsliders.
Why is this? It is because we’re not preaching the law. We are preaching comfort.
Paul says in Galatians 3:24, “therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith” (NASB).
In his talk, Comfort brings unsaved people through the Ten Commandments to show them why they are under the wrath of God and in need of a Savior. Not only does this process reveal one’s state of sinfulness, but it also demolishes the common “I’m basically a good person” or “I’m good compared to most” defenses.
I encourage you to listen to Comfort’s talk here; alternatively, there are video clips available on YouTube; simply search for “Hell’s Best Kept Secret”.
